A night of ancient sounds, intimate reflections and musical time travel — up close with Liam Byrne and his viola da gamba. Think less concert, more confession. My Private Diaries premieres in DAS HAUS this May. It’s a rare chance to be in the room with an artist opening up a part of his inner life — quietly intense, fiercely curious and full of sonic secrets.
My Private Diaries is a sensual dive into music that was never meant to be performed for an audience — until now.
Liam Byrne brings to light the near-forgotten sounds of the 17th-century English lyra viol, a repertoire once played in solitude, like reading poetry alone in your room. This intimate performance turns that private ritual into a shared moment — one shaped as much by gesture as by melody. Part musical archaeology, part love letter, part slow dance with the past.
And yes — it will be cosy, experimental and quietly electrifying.
A Berlin-based viol player with a wild range, Liam Byrne moves effortlessly between centuries and genres. He’s played everywhere from underground clubs to major Victoria & Albert Museums, collaborating with electronic artists, folk musicians, composers, and visual artists across Europe and beyond.
Underneath his adventurous career lies a long, quiet obsession: the delicate, intricate world of lyra viol music, where chords hum like inner thoughts and resonance matters as much as the note itself. This concert is a rare public unveiling of that private passion.
He’s currently a Glenn Gould Bach Fellow — rethinking how we record and feel historical music — but My Private Diaries brings him back into the room with you, live, real and fully present.
Step in from the city. Sink into the evening. Hear music that asks questions rather than gives answers. And after the last notes, stay for a drink and a chat — Liam will be there, and so will we.
