Idiocracy is a satirical sci-fi comedy directed by Mike Judge, depicting a dystopian future where intelligence has sharply declined. The story follows Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson), an average American chosen for a military hibernation experiment. Alongside Rita (Maya Rudolph), a prostitute roped into the project, Joe is accidentally left in stasis for 500 years. When they awaken in 2505, they discover a world where rampant consumerism, anti-intellectualism, and corporate dominance have led to a society that is shockingly ignorant and dysfunctional.

Upon its release in 2006, Idiocracy received limited theatrical distribution and little marketing support from its studio, leading to a modest box office performance. However, the film gained a strong cult following in the years that followed, with many viewers and critics praising its sharp satire and darkly humorous social commentary. Over time, it has been increasingly referenced in political and cultural discussions, with some arguing that its exaggerated dystopian vision feels eerily prophetic. Though it was initially overlooked, Idiocracy is now regarded as one of Mike Judge’s most impactful films, often cited as a biting critique of modern society’s trajectory.
