The most suprising measure of the reign of Charles III was the expulsion of the Jesuits from all their domains in 1767. Still today, 250 years later the issue is still controversial and is diffcult to reach a single judgement.

The expulsion was a secret operation, effective and of a drastic nature. It is curious that not a single rumor from the high hierarchies filtered to the people. The secrecy aimed to avoid any protest maneuver on the part of the numerous sympathizers of the Jesuit order, especially within the nobility and the popular classes. They also wanted to prevent the Jesuits from fleeing, alienating their property, getting rid of their archives and their compromising papers, since the royal orders included the confiscation of properties.

The measures were carried out throughout Spain in the same way, following minutely precise instructions. The commissioners, assisted by notaries and witnesses, ordered all the members of the communities to be assembled in the chapter houses where they proceeded to take roll call of the attendees, and after verifying the presence of the census takers, they ordered the notaries to proceed to read the royal decree of estrangement.

The content of the decree did not clarify the reasons why Charles III decided the expulsion. The text is deliberately imprecise. However, the decree pointed out that all jesuit assets would pass into the hands of the State.
