Institute for Environment, Conservation and Sustainability

The Institute for Environment, Conservation and Sustainability (IECS) explores the living world we inhabit and the multifaceted ways in which human communities have interacted with the environment, past and present. Its programs, activities, and initiatives aim to impact on our environmental futures, by assisting researchers and communities develop ways for human and non-human communities to flourish, despite the all-too-real challenges posed by climate change. It is committed to the development of environmental research attentive to sustainable and transformative ways of advancing just, inclusive and equitable societies

The IECS is one of the four institutes and initiatives of IRISE: The Institutes for Resilient and Inclusive Societies and Ecosystems, a Tri-campus research initiative based at the University of Toronto Scarborough(UTSC). It is directed by Imre Szeman, a Professor of Human Geography at UTSC.
